Fluidity in Permanence

A study of textile, gesture, and the body

Fluidity in Permanence brings together two sculptural corsets that explore how the movement of fabric can be held within a fixed form. Working between garment construction and sculpture, I approached line as a gesture that follows the contours of the body and extends beyond it.

Using two-part epoxy resin, I transformed a polyester and linen blend and gold polyester satin into rigid structures. Draping, folding, and shaping became ways to translate the body’s contours into sculptural volume. As the textiles cured, their responses to the resin produced unexpected folds, changes in color, and irregular surfaces. These transformations guided the development of each piece, making experimentation an essential part of the finished work.

Each corset expresses this inquiry through a distinct treatment of form and surface. In the first, overlapping folds draw attention to the textile itself and the gestures used to shape it. In the second, ridges resembling exposed roots inform a contour traced by artificial floral elements. White silk ribbons threaded through silver metal eyelets continue that line beyond the torso, extending the relationship between the garment and its surrounding space.

Together, the corsets hold the appearance of softness within rigid structures. Their surfaces preserve traces of both the making process and the behavior of the materials. Through this project, I came to understand craftsmanship as a practice of close observation and response, allowing each piece to develop its own character within a shared exploration of movement and permanence.
